Looking to explore the natural wonders of what Maine has to offer? Spend the day at Holbrook Island Sanctuary, one of Maine’s national state parks located in Brooksville, Maine. Unlike other state parks, the sanctuary is shaped on the changes from natural forces, rather than those that are maintained by man made changes like other parks. Whether you are new to hiking and looking for easy trails to try out or are more of an experienced hiker looking for a challenge, there are 9 different trails located in the park to choose from. Surely there is a trail that is just right for you. The Bakeman Farm trail offers a simple stroll through an old farm field, where as the Summit Trail offers more of a rugged, steep hike through wooded areas up to Backwoods Mountain. Your visit here allows you to separate yourself from life’s everyday distractions to enjoy the tranquility of nature.

Fresh Pond ImageAlong your journey you will be able to see the diverse ecosystems thriving together in their natural habitats. Take a step back to listen and see the different types of birds chirping around you once you have made it to the end of Aaron’s trail to Fresh Pond. Look around for Osprey’s and Bald Eagles flying overhead or even Beaver’s transporting logs to create their homes. Enjoy the sounds of the rushing water under the reversing falls at Goose Cove.holbrook island 3  Finish your day at the Indian Sand Bar beach swimming, barbequing or just simply observing the sunset before the park closes for the evening. This park is pet friendly but be advised of the 4 foot leash requirements that the park asks their visitors to follow. Please remember to carry out what you carry in to help keep this park in pristine condition, it may not be your home but it is someone else’s. Park rules ask that all visitors stay on the designated trails and refrain from removing plants and other natural habitants from the area. Whether you are traveling alone or as a group, visiting Holbrook Island Sanctuary on your vacation will be time well spent.

    Trails of Holbrook Island Sanctuary

Aaron Trail – Moderately strenuous hike through deciduous and mossy coniferous forests and old homestead fields to Fresh Pond. (0.8 miles)

Backshore Trail – Easy walk through old estate fields to shore. Ruins of old estate on left and shore on the right side of the fork. (0.7 miles)

Bakeman Farm Trail – Short walk through an old farm field. (0.3 miles)

Beaver Flowage Trail – Easy walk around a beaver-created wetland. (0.6 miles)

Fresh Pond Trail – Easy walk around large beaver pond with many active beaver lodges and nesting wood ducks. Great fall foliage and blooming water lilies. (1.4 miles)
Fresh Pond Interpretive Trail Guide

Goose Falls Trail – Easy to moderate walk along shoreline between the dock area and Goose falls. Views of Holbrook Island and Goose Falls, a reversing tidal waterfall. (0.4 miles)

Iceworks Trail – Moderate walk through mixed woodlands and across a small stream to Fresh Pond. (1 mile)

Mountain Loop Trail – Easy to moderate loop around Backwoods Mountain through both deciduous and spruce-fir forests. Good area for birds and other forest wildlife. (1.7 miles)

Summit Trail – Short, steep hike up wooded mountain through rugged rocks to the top of Backwoods Mountain. A few views of surrounding hills and bays from top. (0.6 miles)
